It was after the second War to End All Wars, in which all of the major countries of the world were engaged in trying to blow each other to bits. It was written in the USA, which had been instrumental in winning that war but had been transformed itself by it. It was written in the context of millions of returned soldiers who had been exposed to vastly different circumstances than their American cornfields had prepared them for. It was written in context of many of them struggling to make sense of their lives. It was written in context of millions of women who were newly enfranchised with jobs making the economy hum struggling to deal with the returning soldiers and the pressure to return to a husband-works-wife-cooks model which they now couldn't stomach.
It was the novel that many of the people who formed the center of the 1960's in the USA read. It was anti-establishment. It was love. It was poetry. It was stream-of-consciousness. It was a beautiful rebellion against what society was still pretending was the right way to live, but that enormous numbers of people could see clearly wasn't right for them and probably never had been.
